HumanWare’s Brailliant Braille Display now Compatible with both iOS and Mac OSX 10.8

Apple recently announced a Mac update to OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, the operating system for the MAC line of computers. In addition to the hundreds of new features that were implemented in this version, the HumanWare Brailliant Braille display product line was added as a supported Mac device. Connect a HumanWare Brailliant 32, 40 or 80 cell display to a Mac running Mountain Lion and you are up and running!

This past March Apple updated their iOS operating system to version 5.1 which powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch products. This update included support for Human Ware’s Brailliant Braille displays to connect via a Bluetooth connection to these iOS devices, and provide control over these tools with Braille input and output. Now both the MAC computer and iOS devices are compatible with all the new HumanWare Brailliant Braille displays.

How do I connect it?

For the simplest connection, with the VoiceOver screen reader active, all a user need do is simply connect the USB cable from their Brailliant display to the Mac’s USB port. The display is instantly recognized and braille is immediately functioning. It does not get any easier than that! For a more mobile connection, one can also choose to use a Bluetooth connection to their Mac and get rid of those pesky wires.

What can I do with it?

Once the Brailliant has been connected to the Mac:

  • Receive instant braille output (No extra drivers or software to install).
  • Control the Mac from the Brailliant’s keyboard and ergonomic thumb keys.
  • Enter text in either contracted or uncontracted braille without ever removing your hands from the display.
  • Physically read those important documents, emails, or utilize the Mac’s new Messages app to iMessage your friends and family, all while seeing their responses on the crisp, high quality braille that Brailliant users have become familiar.
  • If you are an iOS device user, utilize many of the same braille commands used with VoiceOver on your iOS device, on your Mac to minimize any learning curve.
